The Verandah Extension

Densely vegetated plot of farmland at Neral belonging to a nature enthusiast’s family had an existing concrete building when they approached us to build an outdoor cob oven and a veranda extension to this existing structure.

Veranda as an architectural element in a hot and humid climate can be a delight and it makes an airy pocket with a decent shade available to the users.

The clients love to cook themselves and their love extends to their guests, friends and family who visit them on the farm. With a place to prepare and cook outdoors, the guests can also come to the veranda to chat chit and enjoy.

The veranda is most suited to accommodate 10-15 people comfortably. The low height walls either act as seats themselves or have seats adjoining them. A jackfruit tree is also framed close to the veranda. A hand wash area needed is made as an experiment with an in built kadappa basin. Also, learnings of connections of the old with the new came along. With a few failed experiments and a few successes, this project is a treasure in itself.
